James Henry Sutton was born on 7 March 1843 at Marshall County, Alabama. He married Sidney Ann Flynn circa 1865.1 James died on 6 October 1938 at Maquoketa, Jackson County, Iowa, at age 95. His cause of death was influenza.3
He appeared on the census of 1 June 1850 in the household of Benjamin Sutton and Sarah P Sutton at 23rd Subdivision, Marshall County, Alabama.2 James Henry Sutton appeared on the census of 1 June 1860 in the household of Jacob Kennamer and Keziah Kennamer at Tract 5 Range 4 East, Marshall County, Alabama.4 James Henry Sutton fought on both sides in the Civil War of the U.S. He had been orphaned before age 10 in Marshall County, Alabama, then was raised by a family of Pennsylvania Dutch origins who were supportive of Northern state principles. At age 17, he was an outspoken supporter of President Lincoln. In 1862 he was drafted into Company E of the 48th Alabama Confederate Infantry, and he fought in various skirmishes until the winter. He and nine others then deserted the army and scattered. He returned to his home county and bushwhacked until there was an opportunity to surrender himself to a Federal army unit. He was able to be transferred to Nashville, Tennessee with a group of other prisoners, and they were allowed to enlist in the Federal cavalry. He served with his unit for the remainder of the war, mostly as a muscian rather than a soldier.
At the end of the war, he was afraid to return to Alabama and went to Iowa with a member of the Iowa company he had met while hospitalized near the end of the war. He settled in Jackson County, Iowa for the rest of his own life.5 As of after 1865, James Henry Sutton also went by the name of "Alabama Jim" Sutton. About the time of his death, James Henry Sutton was recognized as the last living Civil War veteran in Jackson County, Iowa. He was also thought to be probably the oldest living resident of the county at this same time.
