During the war years 1942-1945 when Japan attacked the British empire, she married John Clement Koop on May 15, 1943 at St. Augustine's Church in Rangoon. Later while John was studying abroad, Elsie worked as a Kindergarten teacher and later a typist at an insurance company in Rangoon.

In 1971, the family returned to Raleigh. For nearly 30 years Elsie volunteered twice a week in the nursery at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church on Clark Avenue to care for the young children of the international mothers who took English conversation classes.
